The book looks at everything from his upbringing in the Quaker community of Fairmount, Indiana to his tragic death on September 30, 1955 and the effects his departure had on the world. It follows Jimmy's early years including his mother's untimely death and its effect on the young James Dean. Next up is Dean’s apprenticeship into the world of acting, from drama school to his first bit-parts in stage plays, TV adverts and films, to the turning point in his career: the audition for his starring role in East of Eden. There is in-depth commentary from some of Dean’s closest friends and family, including Marcus Winslow, Dean’s cousin and the executor to his estate, and William Bast, Dean’s good friend and roommate. This was an informative biography, not really telling anything all that new, but still an enjoyable a read. This book was a treasure released amongst numerous biographies of Dean that were released to mark the 50th anniversary of his death. What made this book unique was the inclusion of letters Dean wrote home to the Winslows. It gives us a new insight into Dean's character and shows the affection he held for 'Mom, Pop and Markie'. A celebration of his life, career and extraordinary legacy - this is a book for all James Dean fans to treasure!
