For the second time James was nominated for an Academy Award as Best Performance. However, once again a living actor won the award, Yul Brenner for The King And I. GIANT received a total of ten Academy Award nominations. Besides Jimmny, Rock Hudson and Mercedes McCambridge received nominations. Only George Stevens took home an award that evening, his second.

bullet Filming began on May 18th 1955 and was completed on September 1955. James didn't join the cast until June 3rd 1955 and his final day of filming was September 22nd. He was invited to a showing of the rushes of the 'last supper' scene on September 27th. In charactersitc form he arrived late for the showing and it would be the last time he and George Stevens would talk. "Now it's all over, we don't have to bug eadh other no more."

George Stevens originally had requested that the lead role go to Grace Kelly instead of Elizabeth Taylor.

GIANT was filmed in Marfa Texas a city of approximately 2900 people located 60 miles from the Mexican border and three hours by car from El Paso.

The Victorian mansion used in GIANT was built in Hollywood at a cost of approximately $200,000 and shipped in sections to Texas. After filming it remained on the land and was eventually converted into a hay barn. The mansion as sinced burned down, only the frame remains.

Over 600,000 feet of film were shot while filming GIANT; in the end only 25,000 feet were actually used.

Jimmy's salary for GIANT was set at $15,000. However with overtime he actually received more thatn $30,000.

In the final scen, Dean (Jett) is supposed to make a speech. Dean made the speech, however, it was totally inchoerrent. Rumor as it that it was later dubbed by Nick Adams.

The press book prepared by Warner Brothers for GIANT made no mention of James' death. It would have been impossible to know that James had died from materials provided in the press book.

Alan Ladd and Richard Burton were both rumored to have been considered for the role of Jett Rink.

GIANT grossed more than 12 million dollars the first time around.

During the filming, James was asked to do a commercial for the National Highway Committee. The irony in this commercial is obvious. While visiting Gig Young dressed in his Jett Rink attire, James discusses his love of racing. "Remember, drive safely because the life you save may be mine."

At the conclusion of GIANT, Jane Deacy James agent, came to Hollywood to negotiate a new contract for him. This new contract guranteed him one million dollars over the next six years with three months each year of free time to do what he wished.
