The mansion originally belonged to J.Paul Getty and was rented at $200 a day for the filming. The same house appeared in the movie Sunset Boulevard. Now torn down, the house orginally was on Wishire Boulevard and Crenshaw Avenue.

The film covers a 24 hour period and was changed from the original Christmas time to Easter.

Locations used in the movie included Santa Monica Community College, the Hollywood jail, and the D.W. Griffith Observatory and Planetarium. James was not new to two of these locations. Five years before he had attended Santa Monica Community College and he had made a pepsi commercial at Griffith Park. Today there is a monument at the Observatory honoring James.

This movie has been categorized as 'cursed' because of the ill fated turn of events which later befell many of the major stars of the film. James of course was killed in a car crash months after filming. Nick Adams (Moose) was found dead of a drug overdose in 1976;Sal Mineo (Plato) was murdered outside of his West Hollywood home in 1978; William Hopper (Judy's father), Edward Platt (Officer Ray) and Nicholas Ray (Director) all died of natural causes. Pier Angeli (James one time girlfriend) died of a drug overdose and Natalie Wood sadly drowned in the waters of Catalina in 1981.
