Movie Premiere
April 10, 1955. This was the only film of Dean's to be released while he was still alive. A special celebrity preview was held March 9, 1955 at Astor Theater on Broadway. This premiere was a benefit for the Actors Studio. Many celebrities attended including Marilyn Monroe as an usherette. James Dean, however was absent from the premiere. "I can't make this scene, I can't handle it."

Awards
James Dean was nominated for an Academy Award for his performance in this film. However, he lost and the award went to Ernest Borgnine for his role in 'Marty. The Foreign Press honoured the picture with the Golden Globe as Best Motion Picture/Drama. Jo Van Fleet won an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress.

James received $20,000 for the film along with $4,000 as an advance.

Because of the immediate star-status James acquired, Warner Brothers issued him a new contract, paying him $100,000 a movie. The first movie scheduled was Rebel Without A Cause.
