What if Hollywood rebel James Dean hadn't died in a car crash at the age of 24? This is the premise of a South African-made TV commercial that has wowed the advertising industry and been lauded as an instant classic. Imagining an alternative history in which Dean is now a Hollywood elder statesman, on his family ranch, racing his own-brand sports car and receiving a lifetime achievement Oscar. The ad, shot in Cape Town, ends with the line: "Given more time, imagine the possibilities." It is for the South African investment company Allan Gray. The producers carried out a worldwide search for a suitable actor, considering entrants in James Dean lookalike competitions in the American midwest. But they settled on Des Erasmus, a mechanic from Cape Town.
